To support this research, you can be a former or current client of Restitute. We know from the work we do with clients at Restitute that when a loved one survives a serious crime, the financial impact can be extremely challenging. Whether it is the time off work to help loved ones get to appointments, the sudden drop in family income, or the additional costs of childcare. It all adds up!
In addition, some people are unable to work due to the impact on their own health, or caring responsibilities. They may miss out of career opportunities, have gaps in their pensions or face costly court bills and fees. Financial commitments made when 2 people are contributing to the family finances suddenly seem in surmountable. Education outcomes such as a drop in a grade for siblings at GCSE or at university has a financial consequence. Medication, GP appointments, health challenges can all be measured to understand the impact of health costs to society.
No-one has EVER captured this data from 3rd party victims so it will be a ground-breaking study.
The study will involve anonymously responding to a specific survey. You may believe that you have not felt any financial impact or that as a family you were able to absorb these costs but there will undoubtedly have been a financial impact, either to you or to society, so please don’t assume this isn’t relevant to you!
We are working with the University of Bristol on this study with the intention of being able to accurately identify the true cost of crime which currently only captures the financial impact on primary victims / survivors.
If you choose, there will also be an opportunity to take part in a research interview with an experienced researcher from University of Bristol.
