What must be in place for clients, alumni and lived-experience involvement outside ordinary service delivery

About this section

2G sets out what must be in place where clients, former clients, alumni or lived-experience contributors are involved in wider Restitute activity outside ordinary service delivery.

It covers events, fundraising, consultation, training input, public speaking, campaigning, media, lived-experience involvement and service-development activity.

It does not cover research and evaluation participation. That sits in 2F.

2G.1 Arrangements before involvement

  1. Before involving former clients, alumni or other lived-experience contributors in events, training, consultation, service development, fundraising, media or public involvement, the site must have arrangements for role clarity, consent, support, expenses, payment and sign-off.
  2. Contribution, consultation, fundraising, speaking or lived-experience involvement must not become informal client support.

2G.2 Current and former clients

  1. The site must have a safe decision-making route for deciding when current or former clients may be involved in events, fundraising, speaking, media, training, consultation, service development or public involvement.
  2. Involvement should normally involve former clients rather than current clients.
  3. There is no fixed minimum period after closure before a former client can be involved. The decision should be based on whether the person is stable, whether the activity is safe, and whether the involvement is genuinely voluntary.
  4. Current clients should not usually be asked to contribute to public-facing activity while they are in active support.
  1. The site must have arrangements for consent, support and role clarity before client, alumni or lived-experience involvement takes place.
  2. Involvement must be voluntary. It must not be presented as expected, owed or required.
  3. Contributors must understand the role, what they are being asked to do, how their contribution will be used, and whether the activity is public, private, recorded, published or shared.
  4. Consent must be specific to the use. Agreement to contribute to one event or document does not create general consent for future use.
  5. Contributors should be able to withdraw consent before publication or use. Where material has already been published or shared, the limits of withdrawal must be explained clearly.
  6. Support should be offered before, during and after emotionally demanding involvement.
  7. Before any contact about in-person activities such as training or events is made, the relevant Lamplight ‘contact after exit’ consent field must show that consent has been given.

2G.4 Payment and expenses

  1. The site must have payment and expenses arrangements in place before involving former clients, alumni or other lived-experience contributors.
  2. Contributors should be paid or reimbursed unless they choose to waive payment.
  3. Expenses should be reimbursed as standard, including travel and alternative care costs where relevant, and contributors should be encouraged to claim rather than absorb costs.
  4. Where training, consultancy, speaking, service development or public involvement activity is separately funded or charged for beyond ordinary funded service delivery, lived-experience contributors should be paid for their contribution.
  5. Where a contributor cannot accept payment because of benefits or other restrictions, alternative arrangements should be discussed with them.

2G.5 Local events, publicity and the Restitute Core Team notification

  1. The site must have arrangements for notifying or seeking agreement from the Restitute Core Team where local events, publicity or public involvement may affect the Restitute name, model, brand, evidence or public reputation.
  2. Delivery Sites may manage local involvement and local events, but activity involving the Restitute name, model, brand or public reputation must be notified to the Restitute Core Team.
  3. Media activity, published material, public case material, wider claims or external publicity using Restitute Model evidence must be agreed with the Restitute Core Team before use.

2G.6 Quotes, case studies and lived-experience material

  1. The site must have arrangements for consent, anonymisation and sign-off before using quotes, case studies, lived-experience material, photos, video, media involvement or public speaking.
  2. Client quotes, case studies, lived-experience material, photos, video, media involvement or public speaking must not be used without specific consent and sign-off.
  3. Anonymisation must be checked carefully. Removing a name may not be enough where family, geography, case details, offence details, court details or timing could identify someone.
  4. Use of lived-experience material must have a clear purpose, and the person must understand how it will be used and any limits on their influence before they agree.
